LITHIUM BATTERY TRANSPORT

In our daily lives, we are surrounded by batteries found in smartphones, tablets, PCs, and numerous household appliances, extending to the new frontier of sustainable mobility, such as electric cars, electric scooters, and e-bikes.

Among the many types of batteries, lithium batteries play a significant role in industry and commerce. Their road transport is specifically regulated by the ADR, classifying them under Class 9 – Miscellaneous Dangerous Substances and Articles. This classification arises from the inherent reactivity of lithium with oxygen and hydrogen, which, under specific conditions (e.g., contact with water), can trigger dangerous chemical reactions. Fires involving lithium batteries pose significant challenges for those tasked with extinguishing them.

Proper packaging and specific labeling are therefore essential, along with detailed transport documentation that distinguishes between lithium batteries shipped alone (e.g., spare batteries), those contained within equipment, or those packaged alongside equipment. Moreover, regulations differentiate between lithium-ion batteries and lithium-metal batteries, and understanding this distinction is critical to avoid shipment planning errors. The transport of lithium batteries may be subject to special provisions, including exemptions from ADR requirements for certain products that meet specific criteria (e.g., a maximum nominal energy in watt-hours). Additionally, it is crucial to properly manage the disposal and transport of battery waste and/or equipment containing batteries, ensuring safety, collection, recycling, and the extended lifecycle of batteries.

Flashpoint supports companies handling lithium batteries by providing a comprehensive range of consulting services to ensure compliance with the regulations governing their transport (ADR, IMDG, IATA) and the Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 on batteries and battery waste. Our approach always begins with a legislative analysis, offering audit services and phone and document-based consultations to identify obligations and deadlines for our clients. Flashpoint delivers customized training courses tailored to each client’s needs and prepares a series of support documents, including operational instructions and risk management reports, which are essential for efficient and compliant handling.
