AREE DI INTERVENTO > Dangerous Goods Transport > ADR TRANSPORT OF HAZARDOUS WASTE

Consulting on ADR transport of hazardous waste

Italian Legislative Decree no. 152 of April 3, 2006 (Environmental Consolidation Act), governs the management of waste, including its road transport. In Part IV, the environmental regulations outline essential requirements for waste classification and transport documentation, including hazardous waste, in synergy with the most recent provisions on traceability (Decree R.E.N.T.R.I. – Ministerial Decree no. 59 of April 4, 2023).

A significant portion of industrial waste has characteristics that classify it as flammable, corrosive, toxic, infectious, or environmentally hazardous. This category of waste requires special handling. Moreover, hazardous waste may also fall under the provisions of ADR depending on the case. Understanding how to align these two regulatory frameworks is crucial for reducing the risk of accidents and improving safety for people and the environment.

ADR governs the national and international road transport of dangerous goods, which includes certain types of hazardous waste. Examples include medical waste produced by hospitals and healthcare centers, waste from the disposal of reagents in fine chemicals and the pharmaceutical industry, and waste generated by the paint and solvent industries.

Transporting waste under ADR requires careful planning to avoid severe penalties under the Road Code and to ensure the safety of people, infrastructure, and the environment. Workers must select appropriate approved packaging and correctly label the package. They must also prepare the correct accompanying documentation (Waste Identification Form and/or Transport Document) and properly signal the road vehicle. All of this starts with accurate classification of the waste for transport purposes.
